I just ran across the fourth word I had to look up in this book. I'm only on page 137!

The word? Epistemology.

Per Wikipedia, it  is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge.[1] It addresses the questions:
  • What is knowledge?
  • How is knowledge acquired?
  • How do we know what we know?
Guess I shouldn't have ditched all those philosophy classes, huh?

Addendum: Damn! Page 142 - panatelas. A long slender cigar. Jeez....

  1. Welcome back to the Blog

  2. Wow! I've never even heard of that word!! How are you enjoying the book?

  3. @ Sarah: I'm really enjoying Pollan's work. I've seen him speak, and I have enormous respect for the man. It's just he's so incredibly erudite, editor of Harper's Magazine and professor at Berkeley and all; sometimes it's hard to keep up!

  4. Ok, I can take that book off the list of things I want to read. Still working my way through Green Eggs and Ham. Yes, I am. And Ham is not Spam. BAM.
